PRAYER
“the hinge of history is a bended knee”
In this unprecedented time we are in, we can pray. God is at work in our homes, our neighbourhoods, our city, our nation and across the globe.
Prayer changes things, prayer changes us, prayer sees lives and communities transformed. Please see below ways in which you can pray in these times.
5th - 11th JANUARY 2026 - WEEK OF PRAYER
As we begin the new year together, we will be holding a week of prayer and fasting - as we seek God’s leading, renew our dependence on him, and place the year ahead in his hands.
This also leads us into our new teaching series, beginning next Sunday (11th). Over Christmas we focused on Everyone’s on the List — the invitation to come and see. Now, as we turn the corner into a new season, we hear Jesus’ deeper invitation: not only to come and see, but to come and follow.
This vision series, The House That God Builds: Growing in Faith and Family, will explore what it means to be disciples of Jesus together — rooted in faith, shaped by him, encouraging one another and sharing his love with others — not just to observe, but to follow him too.
A Week of Prayer & Fasting
To mark the start of this new season, we’re setting aside this week for prayer and fasting. This might look different for each of us — whether that’s fasting from food for a time, simplifying meals, or choosing to fast from something else in order to make space for prayer.
If a simple guide would be helpful, you might like this excellent resource from the Belfrey in York:
We also want to say clearly: this week isn’t about disrupting or replacing the prayer rhythms you may already be settling into, especially if you’ve begun using Bread or another regular devotional pattern. Instead, think of this as adding prayer points into what you’re already doing.
There’s a helpful idea sometimes called “habit stacking” — building something new by attaching it to an existing rhythm. You might choose to incorporate the daily prayer points into your usual devotional time using Bread, or return to them briefly at other moments through the day — over a cup of tea, on a walk, or before bed.
We have produced a simple Prayer and fasting guide..pdf to help us pray each day which you can download here. If you’re part of a family or living in a household with others, you might like to use our growing in faith and family - prayer for everyone guide.pdf guide alongside your regular prayer pattern, as a simple way to pray together during the week.
Alongside personal prayer, we’d also love to encourage you — if you’re able — to gather with one or two others to pray. We’ll also be coming together in person at a few points during the week:
Monday 5th – 9:00am
Salthouse Prayer RoomWednesday 7th – 9:30am
Holy Communion at St Faith’sThursday 8th – 9:00am
Salthouse Prayer RoomThursday 8th – 7:00pm
Salthouse – Hungry, our monthly evening of worship and prayer
Finally, we would LOVE to hear what God is saying to you as you pray and any stories or encouragements of answers to prayer or things you see God doing - small or big! The feedback we got as we prayed through Lent last year and into the summer was SO helpful in discerning our planning and vision as a church - please don't underestimate how a seemingly small, random or insignificant thought, word or picture can be used by Gdd in a powerful way!
As we step into this new year, our prayer is simple: that God would build his house among us — shaping us as disciples, deepening our life together, and drawing others to follow Jesus. Growing in faith, growing in family
With every blessing,
Jim
